Single Image Sundays: Momentary
Two unrelated moments make sense for a moment here. This is made from a photo of a faux stone figurine of a child sleeping, from Pier 1 Imports, in Greensboro, NC (taken with Hipstamatic John S. lens & Rock BW-11 film), along with a photo of a steel pole with peeling paint in the Church Street Parking Deck, in Winston-Salem, NC. I used Photoforge2 to combine the images via layers. The concept was inspired by my favorite photographer, Jerry Uelsmann.

These Really Cool Sites Featured My Art
And I’m not just saying they’re really cool only because they featured my art — although in my biased opinion, I do think they have excellent taste. Go have a look to see my creations in their venues and explore around their sites to discover other great art. Follow their social media channels and sign up for their newsletters if you enjoy a regular dose of visual inspiration.
Art Revolution
The recently-established social network for artists, Art Revolution, featured one of my works across its social media channels, going to its thousands of followers. There is no “featured artists” area in its website as of this writing, but it is very active on Facebook, Instagram, Ello, and Tumblr – all featuring The Oracle, shown here.
Mutantspace
Mutantspace, based in Ireland, is primarily a blog but also produces monthly art cabarets and an annual DIY Arts festival called the Trash Culture Revue. The site regularly updates with unique visuals by artists from around the world, in addition to its unique coverage of food, cultural politics, literature and other topics. It features several of my favorite works, along with a brief writeup.
Surrealism.co
Surrealism.co is a website promoting Surrealism and Surreal Art and Artists, serving as a blog for the site Surrealism Today, which covers contemporary surrealism, fantastic, and visionary art from around the world and web. Several of my works are included at Surrealism.co, where I am a featured artist. This feature also includes an exclusive writeup from me, expounding on the senses of connection and transcendence I appreciate in the surreal category.
Artslant India
ArtSlant is a multimedia platform committed to providing a social perspective on art. The site includes three of my works under the “Surrealism From Nature” theme, served as part of its India branch. The site also has branches in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, London, Paris, São Paulo, Toronto, and China.
Mountain Record
Mountain Record: The Zen Practitioner’s Journal is published by Dharma Communications at Zen Mountain Monastery at Mount Tremper, New York. The publication features a crop of my image, “In Spatium (Appear In The Distance)” as accompaniment to one of its stories, having been spotted by Mountain Record editors via Flickr. It appears in the issue, “Ancestors,” with an essay called “The Return of Ma ah shra true ee, the Giant Serpent” by Leslie Marmon Silko.
Photo One
The Photo One project exists “to gather of talented photograph artists from different countries of the world and share their artworks with the art lovers through our website,” with the long-term aim of establishing a “bridge between east and west cultures via photographic art, and to become a new breath in the universal art.” The site features one of my favorite works, “In Spatium (Appear In The Distance)” as a monthly Editor Award piece, among many other fine artists.
Neu Tymes
Greece-based Neu Tymes supports “young extraordinary persons and teams on many fields of culture, contemporary art and its applications.” The site’s goal is “the unique presentation and design that captures really interesting persons and collaborations with true value of what they are involved until now and their creative steps to the future with full world wide exposure.” The site features five of my most popular creations, and is regularly updated with unique art from around the globe.

Mobile photography as of late
I don’t market myself as a photographer or even claim to be one. But I do take tons of pictures all the time. Some of these make it into my surrealist photomontage art over at RSMITHINGS.com, but others I’m content to just share for fun with minor edits (also done 100% via iPhone, like my art). Here are a few from this year so far that have enjoyed positive reception over at my Instagram, Flickr, Tumblr and Pinterest presences.

Making Things Happen: Now Featured by WeAreJUXT
Two things I’ve been doing lately: travelling and listening to Beats Antique (often simultaneously). The music is, for me, a perfect mood-setter: stimulating, forward moving, and compelling without lyrics. I saw the band twice in 2012, and captured this image of Zoe Jakes at a gig in Asheville, NC. This snapshot makes the perfect foreground for this vista from above the clouds off Florida’s Gulf Coast, brought together via iPhone with the masks & textures of Photoforge2.

Big thanks to the folks at WeAreJUXT for including this image in their weeklyshowcase! This is the second image of mine featured there (here’s the first) and I’m totally flattered, since they constantly and consistently highlight such great creations with insights from their creators (and I’m not just saying that because I’m there). You should definitely check out the whole JUXT site. Here’s what I say about this image over there:My favorite art is the kind that gets the viewer to consider things in new ways. I believe that’s the most exciting thing about sharing creativity: the opportunity for a mind-expanding experience. That can happen for me through words, music, or with visual art as in the works of my favorite artists, Salvador Dalí and Jerry Uelsmann. The story behind this image is that I was on a business trip last month and happened to be in the air at just the right time to capture a glorious sunrise from above the clouds. I knew I wanted to remember the moment, but didn’t know what form that would take. This week, the vision hit me: a dancer amid the clouds with selective lighting and textures was what I wanted to make happen. I instantly thought of this silhouette image I shot last year at a show by one of my favorite bands, Beats Antique, which happen to be on heavy rotation during my recent travels. The mysterious form in the foreground is the troupe’s Zoe Jakes as shown backlit from behind a screen with exotic costume accents. The spell-casting pose along with textures, layer modes and and masking in Photoforge2 makes the mind-expansion thing happen.

Bridge Ahead, Road Behind
Important: My vehicle was NOT in motion when this was taken! In fact, this was during a total standstill, which happened to afford a glimpse of resting gulls amid a view of leading lines in reverse juxtaposed with a pause in forward motion. Briefly. Shot with my iPhone, processed with the TTV Photo Studio app.

Stylized Instamatic 104
I dig the convergence of technology and time here in one brief second, now extended to the world and infinity. Here’s a snapshot of one of our modern photographic ancestors I modified with the amazing ToonPaint iPhone app, after shooting with Hipstamtic (a modern-retro simulator, no less). I found the camera at a sweet vintage shop called “Ideas” on Burke Street, Winston-Salem, NC. Original here.

Macro Mantis: Insect Photography Up Close
I see the world in new ways since discovering iPhoneography, especially in close-up macro view. A rich universe of detail exists all around us, all the time, just waiting to be appreciated. And with only a little effort we’re free to visit whenever we want.
Praying Mantis – Here’s Looking At You!
Macro Mantis, featured recently at the 1000 Words Showcase by the WeAreJuxt team.
I noticed this mantis on the porch one morning and brought him to the kitchen table with a glass and some paper. He seemed fine with that, and I was careful not to harm him throughout the shoot.
With my iPhone 4, a macro lens by Photojojo, and a high-powered flashlight from Home Depot, I captured several shots, some like this using Hipstamatic’s John S. lens and Rock BW-11 film. The app adds a random depth that I like.
Experimenting with the light and camera positioning, I coaxed out varying shadows and highlights, the most dramatic being when the beast seemed to stare right into the lens. No doubt he was experiencing what being abducted by aliens must be like for humans.
After about five minutes of that, it was back to the wild on a bush in the yard where he blended in much better than in the kitchen.

Flickr to Instagram: It’s ON!
I just had my first whirl with the new Flickr mobile app. And… woah. It’s good. I mean really good.

The new Flickr app for iPhone sports filters, easy browsing, a nice uploading interface… all on top of Flickr’s superb online Pinterest& Twitter integration. Overall, I must say it looks like Instagram got Flickr to step up its game. To that I say, well-played, Flickr. Well-played indeed.
Operation: Target Instagram
If Instagram feels like it’s in the crosshairs, it’s with good reason. I had long been a fan of Flickr for general storage, but gravitated toward Instagram for the image discovery & immediacy of sharing. I have a feeling that’s going to change. And not just for me — I know more than a few folks who have been less than pleased with and seekingalternatives to Instagram lately thanks to spam or yanking its previews from Twitter.
This is not to say it’s perfect. It’s still not as snappy as Instagram, since applying filters and edits takes a bit longer — but you can do meaningful edits right from within the app like adding text, brightness/contrast, and basic retouching. You have to use aseparate 3rd party app at present to do any of that for an Instagram upload. Conversely, features like the ability to tag people in photos, browse your favorite groups, and do batch uploads (thanks, Emily @_@) were already baked into Flickr. Having these tools now in the mobile app — along with just basic functionality like being able to zoom in — makes Flickr’s app superior to Instagram on a number of noticeably important fronts.
Given the massive leap forward of this latest edition, I’m optimistic that things will only improve further for Flickr going forward. Here’s a closer look with video of the new app fromFlickr’s blog:

Instagram Spam Protest – Go Private December 4
Instagram spam is exploding, with no stop in sight. Formerly attractive hashtag photo groups are now becoming polluted with ads for more followers and get-rich-quick schemes:

Friendly Fireman: Single Image Sundays
I met this fellow last week. He is actually a fireman. And he was friendly enough to let me take his picture. I explained that it would end up in a wild edit and showed him some examples on the spot with my phone. He was cool with that. And here we are. The Haunted Mansion: Snapshot Sundays
In honor of public relations for the Halloween season, here are some snapshots using Hipstamatic of my favorite DisneyworldMagic Kingdom attraction, The Haunted Mansion. I snapped these photos with my phone while waiting in line and did a quick post on a bus between parks with the WordPress app. I’ve been here the last couple of days (the park, not just the mansion) and it’s been excellent.
